In the winter of 2024, the Noto Peninsula will experience its first Christmas since the devastating earthquake. “HIKARU KINTSUGI” is an illumination project that shines a light on the Ishikawa and Noto areas, which still bear the scars of the disaster nearly a year later. Inspired by the “kintsugi” culture deeply rooted in Ishikawa Prefecture, this project uses the art of repairing broken objects with gold to symbolize resilience and renewal.
Kintsugi, a practice that breathes new life into broken pieces by mending them with gold, reflects the spirit of recovery and hope. As Japan’s leading producer of gold leaf and home to traditional lacquerware like Wajima-nuri, Ishikawa Prefecture is the perfect setting for this project. “HIKARU KINTSUGI” aims to connect Tokyo’s Yaesu district with Ishikawa’s Noto region, while illuminating the ongoing efforts toward recovery in the disaster-affected areas.
At the heart of the project is the interactive “KINTSUGI TUGIKI” tree, inspired by the traditional craft of kintsugi. The tree is made from a combination of wood from Ishikawa and Tokyo, symbolizing the act of piecing together broken fragments to create something new and radiant. When visitors place their hands on the tree’s base, golden light spreads across the structure, connecting its parts like kintsugi, accompanied by enchanting music that fills the space with a magical atmosphere.
The project is produced by HYTEK, with spatial and interaction design by Hakuhodo. The music is provided by Kan Sano, an artist from Ishikawa Prefecture. The materials from Ishikawa are sourced in collaboration with “Noto Fukko Lab”, “Furuta Lumber”, and “Kozai Create Aogumi”, while the Tokyo materials are provided by “Mori Mirai”. Together, they bring to life a tree that symbolizes the unity and resilience of Ishikawa and Tokyo.
